MEMBER HCI INSIGHTS

The Dell SDS (Software-Defined Storage)/HCI (Hyperconverged Infrastructure) Survey In today’s business climate, Information Technology (IT) is changing, shifting from a cost center to a business differentiator. For IT to embrace and accelerate this transformation, it’s necessary to move beyond virtual servers. To better understand the considerations behind this transition, Dell sponsored a survey among 520 IT professionals, who are members of the VMware User Group (VMUG). The survey was conducted in March 2021 by the Member Insights team at VMUG . Here are some key insights and takeaways. Trends Eighty-two percent of survey respondents use traditional 3-tier architecture, comprised of server, storage, network, while 47% use a hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI). On-premises technology is a major factor in IT, but public-cloud solutions will be a part of the equation. Twenty percent of those surveyed mentioned expanding their public-cloud infrastructure the most over the past year. Add

Why You Should Let Modern Cloud Infrastructure Change Your Job Description

Image
Getting the best value from your cloud services is the job of ITOps. Today’s IT requires instantaneous reaction to external and internal changes in technology offerings, particularly around cloud resources. Your company needs  you  to keep up with the speed of business that continually increases.     We know the vAdmin role is evolving. It’s no longer about VM level management but also managing Apps in a self-service automated environment that’s running on cloud resources that best fits the app.    The vAdmin is well poised to make this shift and move to a Platform Engineer role. The big question is: How do you do automate the day-to-day role while gaining visibility to the IT needs of the business unit and customer?    You Can Do It   First, realize you  can  do it. The vSphere and VMware environment are the foundation for the modern cloud infrastructure. You need to build off that skillset to give your company the flexibility a cloud operating model provides.    If you started with p

Dell Tech World 2021

Dell Tech World 2021 was virtual again, and year two brought a better experience for the attendee. The production value, the non-Zoom feel, the session layouts, all made the event more enjoyable. Beyond the polish, there were some interesting announcements and updates VMUG members should pay attention to. Innovation First, a realization of what the collective IT community (including you, VMUG members!) have done during the pandemic. Michael Dell said, “Decades of work combined with a burst of innovation reengineered the world.” That burst of innovation was many nights and weekends figuring things out without a backup plan to resort to. Everyone went home to work and moved to the “do anything from anywhere” world and we had to figure out how to make that happen. Kudos to VMUG members everywhere for playing a big role in the innovation we experienced in 2020. Tech Makes or Breaks an Organization The second thing was the realization Tech is not IT, it is the entire organization. This is

Lost Connections

VMUG Leader Summit Feb 2020 The recent pandemic has caused us to really examine our personal and work environments. Most of us have had to learn to be fluid and adjust accordingly to the constantly changing global situation. However, vaccines are starting to roll out and there is a sense that the end is in sight. I've spent many nights asking myself ,"what do face -to-face meetings and happenstance encounters we cannot predict look like now?" For over a year now those encounters have not taken place, and I predict we will continue to feel that 12+ month void of random connections for many years. We have all had the experience of meeting someone, face-to-face, that led to an important event in your life. Perhaps a friend or a business colleague, your spouse, or your next job. Those "random connections" have not taken place for a very long time. Our lives are often shaped by these connections, but for some, these connections are a necessity. It’s why we go to la
